This past weekend started with our annual Youth Day Competition on Saturday. Our juniors were out in full force early Saturday morning till late Saturday afternoon running this day. Special congratulations must go to Mumbene Mualadzi who had the perfect shot on the third hole getting his second hole-in-one of his golfing career. Well done to all the juniors for making this day a great success. Thank you to all our regular members for contributing to our juniors. The extra money raised on this day will go to the get-away trip at the end of the year to the Nedbank Challenge at Sun City.

While this was taking place this years’ second major was underway at the Olympic Club in America.

With some familiar players in contention it was a typical US Open where a Par was a good score. Going in to the back nine, I thought Ernie was in with a great position to lift his third US Open trophy, but his last couple of holes let him down. After his heroics I thought that Jim Furyk would take the title but his snap hook on the 16th cost him. Who would have known that the World No. 1 and the defending champion will both miss the cut and not compete. But at the end, Web Simpson from America managed to outlast the field. For those of you that are not aware who he is, he came second behind Luke Donald on last year’s order of merit on the PGA Tour.

Well done to the US Open Draw Winner.

Norma and Errol Hart pulled both Web Simpson and Michael Thompson for first and second place and David Guthrie for getting Graeme McDowel. Thanks to everyone who took part. I am looking forward to the Open Championship.

On the other side of the Atlantic, our honorary member, Darren Fichardt, won on the European Tour in the Saint-Omer in France. He shot into the lead and won this tournament by three shots. This is his third European tour title. Shooting four rounds of 68; 69; 69 and 73. Well done Darren.
